COSTA MESA, Calif., Oct. 27, 2011 – The all-new 2012 Hyundai Veloster three-door coupe earned the “Urban Car of the Year” title from Decisive magazine. “The Urban Vehicles of the Year” awards are selected by a panel of independent automotive journalists who spend several months evaluating the most stylish, practical and attainable vehicles annually. After driving dozens of cars and trucks in a variety of North American urban settings, they panel selected Veloster as a stand-out performer in the 2012 class.

Hyundai’s all-new 2012 Veloster delivers innovation to the compact coupe segment with standard features such as a unique third door for easy rear-seat access, Hyundai’s Blue Link™ telematics system, Pandora® internet radio, seven-inch touch-screen display, and a new 1.6-liter Gasoline-Direct-Injected (GDI) four-cylinder engine and six-speed transmission. GDI technology helps deliver highway fuel economy of 40 mpg, lower emissions and higher reliability. With a starting price of $17,300 (plus freight), Veloster adds great value to its compelling list attributes.

“Conceived to attract new, youthful drivers to the Hyundai brand, Veloster stands out from the crowd with a stylish yet functional design that combines the best characteristics of both a coupe and hatchback,” said Scott Margason, director, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “The unique personality of the car is attracting many different types of shoppers and we’re honored that the panel of experts with Decisive magazine felt it met the needs of urban drivers so well.”

The Urban Vehicles of the Year winners and finalists will be honored at the 16th Annual Urban Wheel Awards (UWA) on Sunday, January 8, 2012, the MotorCity Casino Hotel’s Sound Board Theater in Detroit, Michigan. The 16th Annual Urban Wheel Awards, hosted by the Emerging Diversity Education Fund (EDEF) and Decisive Media, has been named the Official Multicultural Event of the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) by the 2012 NAIAS Executive Committee.

“The Hyundai Veloster is a combination of a hip and edgy image, along with exceptional value to price and outstanding fuel economy that is perfectly suited for urban drivers,” said Lyndon Conrad Bell, Decisive magazine’s editor-in-chief. “Hyundai’s choice to make its halo car an entry-level model excites us even more. Hyundai Veloster Turbo by ARK Performance Revealed: SEMA Preview

Ark_performance_hyundai_veloster_1

ARK Performance has been hard at work on their SEMA 2011 Project Hyundai Veloster, and now finished photos of the vehicle have popped up online at Veloster.org. The theme of the project was to build a rally-inspired Veloster, featuring a custom twin-scroll turbo setup giving it 210-hp while its bright green and flat gray paint scheme gives it the aggressive look it needs.

ARK fabricated the custom turbo kit and intercooler system and also outfitted the Veloster with a six-piston brake kit, eight-point chromoly rally-style roll cage, and DTP track coilover system. Additional suspension modifications include front and rear upper sway bars, camber arms and control arms, ARK’s GRIP dual exhaust, downpipes and test pipes.

For the inside, ARK turned to JPM Coachworks to outfit the Veloster with Alcantara interior upgrades on the seats, shift boot, dashboard, headliner, doors and visors. A custom stereo install featuring Image Dynamics components was also done thanks to Adam Perry.

ARK focused on the aesthetics, transforming the subtle Veloster to one mean looking machine thanks to their CFX Designs line of accessories. ARK outfitted the Veloster with their own front and rear wide fenders, front lip, side skirts, rear bumper and grille. In the rear is an ARK SFX rear wing while OneEighty supplied the project with new headlights, taillights and fog lamps. The wheels are Advan’s RZ in Gunmetal wrapped with Nitto NT05 rubber. The custom paint on the body was done by Beyond Autobody.

A Redone Hyundai Elantra Touring is Due in U.S. Next Year!

A redesigned Hyundai Elantra Touring wagon -- not really an Elantra and known to most of the world outside North America as the i30 -- will be brought to the U.S. next year, Hyundai U.S. officials had told Drive On that the new version would come to the U.S. eventually.

The redone i30 -- which is sold in hatchback and wagon models and is a hot seller in Europe -- was first shown last month at the Frankfurt Motor show. And today, the South Korean automaker gave it an official rollout event, complete with models, in Seoul.

While the hatch has never been sold in North America, the wagon, rebadged as the Elantra Touring, has had critical success and modest sales for high value and features in a small wagon.

AFP says Hyundai expects the redone i30 to up the competition against such vehicles as the arch-rival Volkswagen Golf and that it hopes to sell 215,000 of the new model next year -- 190,000 of them outside South Korea.

Following the Frankfurt show, German auto news and shopping research site Auto Motor und Sport reported, citing unnamed sources, that Hyundai plans an i30 hybrid version -- possibly a plug-in -- at least for Europe in 2013 to compete there with Toyota's Prius and other coming electrics.

Hyundai Builds On Its Industry- Leading Fuel Economy Reporting

31985_1_1

COSTA MESA, Calif., Oct. 4, 2011 – With yesterday’s September sales press release, HyundaiMotor America has begun disclosing both its sales-weighted Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) results and its average window-label fuel economy results. Hyundai is the first automaker to disclose either of these important fuel economy data points.

“At the beginning of the year, we began reporting monthly sales-weighted Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) results, to allow journalist, policy-makers, and consumers the ability to judge our progress against the evolving CAFE standards,” said John Krafcik, Hyundai Motor America’s president and CEO. “Now, we are going one step further and sharing average window-label fuel economy results, so stakeholders can better understand the very real difference between these two metrics.”

CAFE fuel economy is based on data from fuel economy tests and does not include adjustments taken to reflect real-world driving conditions. These are used to set federal standards. Average window-label fuel economy is what is shown on the vehicle window sticker. It is calculated by taking data from fuel economy tests and applying adjustments which results in ratings that more accurately reflect what drivers will get in real-world driving. Each month Hyundai will provide both sets of data to ensure that journalists, policy-makers, and consumers understand the significant differences between CAFE standard fuel economy values and real-world fuel economy values.

“CAFE values, since they are unadjusted for real-world driving conditions, are more than 30 percent higher than the real-world adjusted fuel economy values shown on new car window stickers,” said Krafcik. “It’s important to continue to make this point so the dialogue around fuel economy standards, which are based on CAFE values and not real-world values, can be put into the appropriate context.”
