Hyundai Elantra Sets All-Time Sales Record

Hyundai Motor America announced the Hyundai Elantra, ALG’s compact car residual value leader for three straight years, has set another all-time sales record in 2012, surpassing last year’s total of 186,361 units earlier this month. With a week left in the year, Elantra could become Hyundai’s second model to break the 200,000 unit mark in annual sales, joining its big brother Sonata at that level, which is also built at Hyundai’s assembly in Alabama.

“Adding the third shift to our plant in Alabama this year has allowed us to better meet demand for Elantra,” said John Krafcik, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor America. “Elantra buyers love its recipe of ALG-class-leading residual value, bold design, and outstanding value. With a full year of three-shift U.S. production in 2013 we hope to introduce even more American car buyers to Elantra next year.”

Hyundai Motor America Breaks All-Time November Sales Record

Hyundai Motor America today announced record sales of 53,487 vehicles in November, an eight percent total sales increase compared with the same record-setting period a year ago. Sales are also up eight percent for the first eleven months of the year.

“The Black Friday sales period once again provided a strong boost for Hyundai in the back half of the month and helped break our all-time November sales record,” said Dave Zuchowski, executive vice president of sales. “We were also very encouraged by the strong sales recovery experienced in those northeastern regions that were ravaged by Super Storm Sandy and expect continued momentum there for the balance of the year.”

The recent recipients of ALG’s award for the highest residual value -- Azera, Elantra and Santa Fe -- all experienced solid sales gains over last November, with Elantra up 28 percent. Sonata sales continue to be strong registering a 13 percent uptick for the month. Additionally, the new three-row, seven-passenger Santa Fe made its world debut at last week’s 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, joining the two-row, five-passenger Santa Fe Sport, and will be on sale early 2013.

“We’re encouraged that the 10 percent month-over-month lift firms like Compete have seen in our shopper counts has translated to our best-ever November retail sales and total sales,” said John Krafcik, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor America. “With increased Elantra availability, thanks to the recently added third shift in our Alabama plant, and demand high for everything in our lineup from Accent to Equus, we’re looking forward to breaking our all-time annual sales record early in December.”

2013 Hyundai Elantra GT Named "Best Value" In Popular Mechanic's 2013 Automotive Excellence Awards

The 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT has been named “Best Value” in this year’s Popular Mechanics’ Auto Excellence Awards. The Elantra GT was recognized for its use of class-leading technologies, use of interior space, and competitive pricing. Popular Mechanics magazine covers how today’s technologies affect the things men are most interested in, including: their homes, consumer electronics, cars, science, computers, sports and current events and explains the way the world works today and into the 21st century.

“Of all the quality compacts currently available, most impressive is the new Elantra GT,” said Popular Mechanics editors. “The GT’s practical, wagon-like hatchback was built primarily for Europe, so it’s shorter than any other Elantra, but packs a substantial 51-cubic-foot cargo hold when the seats are folded down. That’s more than some larger wagons. Yet this hatch also shares some parts with Hyundai’s sporty Veloster coupe, so when the road turns into a twisty ribbon of fun, the GT is a willing partner.”

The Popular Mechanics’ Auto Excellence Awards recognize cars in 10 distinct categories: Car of the Year, Fun to Drive, Performance, Hauling, Luxury, Design, Versatility, Technical Innovation, Value and Fuel Efficiency.

“Elantra GT is a fun-to-drive, functional, five-door compact hatchback,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president, Product and Corporate Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Elantra GT is one of the latest examples showcasing how Hyundai is redefining the compact car and setting new standards in automotive design, efficiency and functionality.”

Elantra GT’s utilization of space makes the interior feel roomy and comfortable. Under the skin, the Elantra GT shares some chassis tuning and suspension from the Hyundai Veloster, making it a nimble counterpart whether drivers are on city streets or mountain roads. Coupled with class-leading technologies such as Driver Selectable Steering Mode, and impressive standard features like Bluetooth connectivity, the Elantra GT sits at the top of the compact car segment, and with a starting price of $18,395, it delivers this driving experience at thousands less than the competition.

Hyundai Retains No. 2 Ranking In CarMD's Vehicle Health Index

Hyundai ranks as the number two brand in terms of vehicle health, according to the second annual CarMD® Vehicle Health Index™ Manufacturer & Vehicle Rankings. Additionally, Hyundai has the lowest average repair cost among the Top 10 manufacturers and has five models in the Top 100 vehicles list (2011 Santa Fe, 2010 Genesis, 2010 Sonata, 2009 Sonata and 2009 Santa Fe).

“Hyundai has clearly gone above and beyond to design reliable vehicles to last longer with a lower cost of ownership for the people who drive them,” said Art Jacobsen, vice president, CarMD. “While there are many reliable vehicles to choose from, being included on the CarMD® Vehicle Health Index™ Rankings and Lists puts Hyundai among the top 5 percent of all vehicles on the road today.”

“Hyundai’s rise to the top tier of manufacturers can really be traced back to their engineering,” said CarMD.com editors. “Their vehicles are designed with service and maintenance taken into consideration. This leads to lower average repair costs and greatly helps their scoring.”

Hyundai’s Vehicle Health Index score improved from 0.85 to 0.67 this year, the exact score that earned Toyota the No.1-ranked manufacturer spot in 2011. The Index is based on the combined fewest average repair incidents and lowest average repair costs for model year 2002 to 2012.

Based on more than 163,000 specific repairs performed from Sept. 1, 2011 to Sept. 1, 2012, the Index encompasses approximately 136 million vehicles. The CarMD Index ranks the top 10 manufacturers, top 100 vehicles, top three vehicles by category and most prevalent repairs by make.

“Hyundai’s ranking on CarMD’s Vehicle Health Index reinforces the strength of our brand and the reliability of our vehicles,” Frank Ferrara, executive vice president, Customer Satisfaction, Hyundai Motor America. “Our dedication to customer service and quality vehicles is backed by Hyundai Assurance – Hyundai’s commitment to the enduring value of every vehicle we build.”

Hyundai Moving Ahead with Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Powered Tucson

Hyundai intends to put its fuel-cell Tucson into what its executives call, oxymoronically, “small-scale mass-production.” By 2015 Hyundai says total production will have reached 1000 units, mostly for Europe. The company’s European boss says it could be “up to 10,000 units a year after 2015, mostly for California and Europe, provided the market and infrastructure are up to it.”

Hyundai Tucson ix35 fuel cell crossover rear side view 300x187 imageThe crossover, which will be a lease-only vehicle for selected fleets up to 2015, will be built down the regular Tucson assembly line in Ulsan, Korea. After that it will be made available for private buyers to purchase, at a projected €40,000 ($52,000), although cars are more expensive in general in Europe than the U.S. so Californian buyers would potentially see a lower price.

The modified Hyundai Tucson has a 100kW fuel-cell stack, is capable of 100 mph, and gets to from 0 to 62 mph in 12.5 seconds, the company claims. We tested our long-term all-wheel-drive 2010 Hyundai Tucson, with a 176-hp 2.4-liter I-4 and a six-speed automatic transmission, accelerating from 0-60 mph in 9.0 seconds. The range on a full tank of hydrogen is 367 miles on the European test drive cycle. The tank capacity is 12 pounds of hydrogen, at 700 bar. Refueling takes “a few minutes” according to Hyundai. The 700bar pressure and the refueling nozzle are the global standard for filling stations.

Hyundai Tucson ix35 fuel cell crossover interior instrument cluster 300x187 imageThat stack gets its oxygen from ambient rather than compressed air, which Hyundai says will lead to lower parasitic power loss. Also, the passengers will hear less noise because there is no compressor. The stack feeds a lithium-ion buffer battery, the same as the one in the Sonata Hybrid.

Motor Trend has driven a prototype of the vehicle, and it feels like an EV in terms of silence and smoothness. Passenger space is uncompromised versus the gasoline model, and the trunk floor is only a few inches higher.

Hyundai, together with Honda, Daimler, Nissan, and Toyota, is working with European local and city governments to get hydrogen-filling infrastructure in place.

A big thanks to Mia for taking the time to write this wonderful review for us!

"I contacted the dealership last night and left this afternoon with a brand new car! I was pleasantly surprised with a great overall experience, which makes me more than happy to write a good review.
Background: I've been looking for a Sonata 2.0T SE for a few months and researched invoice price versus MSRP versus the "fair" price given by Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds, CarsDirect/TrueCars. I've gotten quotes from a few different dealerships - one was through Costco Auto, but wasn't much different than the "fair" price. One thing I learned: salesmen will throw out the term "Costco price", but it's not legit unless Costco Auto has a trained representative at the dealership who has a Costco membership price sheet (which you have to ask to see). Anyways, I was thisclose to buying from a different dealership the night before and I'm so glad I didn't. Although they were BBB rated, it was not a pleasant experience. They were pushy, sarcastic, somewhat condescending, and unprofessional (legs kicked up on the chair, drug references, using profanity - I'm not personally offended by stuff like that, but I believe there's a proper way to conduct yourself at work, especially when you don't know your client). I was almost determined to NOT buy from them, but there are so few Sonata 2.0T's being sold without the navigation package already installed that I nearly gave in. In the end, their "absolute best price you won't find anywhere else" was higher than the "fair" price and that just didn't work for me. My Cerritos Hyundai experience: I got an "Internet Price" quote from David Davila, the Internet Fleet Manager, via email that was lower than the "fair" price AND invoice price stated on KBB and Edmunds, even before manufacturer rebate. I will be honest and say that I was really skeptical, especially after reading so many negative Yelp reviews, the fact that they're not BBB rated, and David isn't listed on the Cerritos Hyundai website (yes, I do that much research). I prepared myself for the likelihood that it would be a bait-and-switch situation or that the price would somehow increase once I showed up in person. I'm so happy to say that wasn't the case AT ALL! David was friendly, helpful, and straightforward, without ever being pushy or giving off the stereotypical "car salesman" vibe. He gave me the exact price as what was emailed - and this already included some of the "goodies" I'd anticipated needing to bargain for! I did ask for one more "goody" which they eventually agreed to, after a bit of resistance. Overall, it was so easy that it seemed TOO easy, which actually made me more paranoid and skeptical that something was wrong or I'd missed something. David's explanation was that Internet Pricing is lower and "to the point" because it's geared towards volume of sales. Who knows how it really works, but I definitely enjoyed this transaction instead of being harassed by a floor salesman and having to haggle or play games.
Next was Kevin Lee, the Finance Manager. I'd been bracing myself to be bombarded with warranties, alarm systems, and whatever else I "needed". Nope! Kevin was personable and extremely efficient. He'd present the options and if I said no, we'd just move on to the next step. The paperwork part was quick and painless (minus the parting with hard-earned money, of course) and we were done! Again, it was so easy that it seemed too easy - it's kind of sad that great customer service makes me suspicious and paranoid. At this point I took my old car down the street to sell at CarMax, thinking their offer would beat the dealership trade-in offer. I even asked if David would pick me up from CarMax if the deal went through and he agreed. I don't see how customer service gets better! Unfortunately, the CarMax price was not what I wanted (even lower than dealership offer) so I made other arrangements to get both old and new car back home. One note: although I did not formally meet Javed Rasheed, the General Sales Manager, he did check on me once when I was wandering around the office, just to make sure David was still helping me. Between that small gesture and seeing his personal responses to unhappy reviewers on Yelp, it seems that he genuinely cares and I feel reassured that if I ever need to go back to the dealership with any problems (hopefully not), I will be taken care of in a satisfactory manner.
I'm sure everyone's experience will vary, most likely depending on the salesman, but I had a great experience working with David Davila and would highly recommend buying through him. Thank you for exceeding expectations on what my car buying experience would be!" - Mia L.

Hyundai Design And Technical Center Creates "Velocity" Factory-Tuner Concept For 2012 Sema Show

Hyundai America’s internal design and technical center has created the “Velocity” factory-tuner concept for the company’s popular Veloster sport coupe. The Velocity concept proudly debuts at the 2012 SEMA show under the Hyundai banner. Velocity represents a joint effort between the Design and Engineering divisions of Hyundai America Technical Center in Irvine, California.

1

The Velocity concept expands on all of the original Veloster concept strengths in an aggressive, no-holds-barred factory-racer design language. Huge 19 x 9.0 inch, HRE lightweight satin-charcoal racing wheels, tarmac-scraping lower body kit with generous front and rear brake cooling ducts, lift-reducing rear diffuser, oversized rear wing, and #1 racecar design graphic. While unmistakably racetrack-oriented, the Velocity concept retains the original Veloster silhouette, focusing on exponential performance gains and functional design cues.

“In creating Velocity, we were inspired to take the Veloster’s original concept strengths to their fullest expression,” said Chris Chapman, head of Hyundai’s Irvine, California design center. “Velocity gave our design and engineering teams license to take Veloster far beyond everyday production car limitations.”

The 1.6-liter, direct-injected Veloster engine received customized engine modifications by Cosworth, including performance pistons, rods, turbocharger, intercooler, intake manifold, intake-charging design, fuel system and engine management. The new engine boasts more than 400 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque for explosive acceleration out of bends.

Matching the muscular exterior statement, Velocity suspension and braking modifications handle the acceleration capabilities under hood, with Brembo® 4-piston calipers and two-piece rotors, Bilstein® springs with monotube dampers, and Kumho Ecsta SPT 275/35R19 high performance summer tires. The comprehensive list of Velocity performance enhancements include:
